Disaster Planning Before a disaster occurs: Be prepared and have a disaster plan. Contact area hotels and see which hotels allow pets. Keep a list of these places along with where they are located and phone numbers. In case of a disaster that would affect your surrounding area, locate a chain of hotels that allow pets and keep that information. Another possibility would be to keep a list of kennels and friends both in your area and elsewhere that could possibly shelter your pets during a disaster. Prepare an emergency evacuation kit for your pets. This kit should include food and water dishes, medications, veterinary records, leashes, and crates. If you have a cat you should include a litter pan and litter. Store enough water and food to last at least three days for each pet. A manual can opener and recent photos of your pets are also a good idea.
